» Popoyan
Popoyan is known as ‘La Ciudad Blanca’ – The White City, in reference to the white chalk facades of the buildings. After Cartagena, Popoyan is the second most impressive colonial settlement.Founded in 1537, it played an important role in colonial times, as it was the mid-way point between Cartagena and Quito. Its temperate climate attracted wealthy families and gold prospectors who built stately homes and fine churches decorated with artwork from Spain. The importance of this administrative point is highlighted by the fact that it was the only town, other than Santa Fe Bogota, to have its own coin mint.
Popoyan’s historic centre is one of the most beautiful and well preserved in Colombia with fine houses that have become heritage symbols.
